Tangyuan – glutinous rice dumpling is traditionally a chinese food eaten during Yuanxiao or the Lantern Festival as it means “first evening”, being the first full moon after Chinese New Year, which is always a new moon. Yet another treat to find at Singapore hawker food centers, though it is served hot, it is still a wonderful dessert for most people.

One of the favorite snacks loved by Singaporeans and others that can be found at hawker centers is Pisang Goreng along with other deep friend snacks. However, this may be one of the few treats that are no longer as commonly found as it used to be these days.

Another type of food that can be easily found in Singapore hawker food center is the Otah. The typical Otah that is wrapped in banana leaf is made by mixing fish paste with a mixture of spices including chillies, garlic, shallots, turmeric, lemon grass and coconut milk. Steaming of Otahs is rare in Singapore as most would barbecue it over a pit of charcoal which is actually more delicious. But it has to be a careful process as banana leaves are easily burnt, so it would not be nice to have the Otah fillings spilled out of the burnt leaves.

For a hearty meal at a typical Singapore hawker food center, you can always dig in to a good plate of Braised Duck Rice. In Singapore, there are two types, the Roast Duck or Braised Duck. However, the important criteria of a good and delicious duck meat is in the tenderness of the meat – it must not be too hard yet still has a little resistance when it is chewed.


A Bloody Mary is a popular cocktail containing vodka, tomato juice, and usually other spices or flavorings. Some may actually think it is the perfect drink to have in the mornings or during Sunday brunches. But it can be certain that this is one drink anyone can have at anytime of the day to their own liking.
