Tangyuan – glutinous rice dumpling is traditionally a chinese food eaten during Yuanxiao or the Lantern Festival as it means “first evening”, being the first full moon after Chinese New Year, which is always a new moon. Yet another treat to find at Singapore hawker food centers, though it is served hot, it is still a wonderful dessert for most people.

Tangyuan is made with glutinous rice flour that is mixed with a small amount of water to form balls that can be filled or unfilled, it is then cooked and served in boiling water. Typically, the glutinous rice balls can be filled with ingredients such as sugarcane rock candy, sesame paste, red bean paste or chopped peanuts with sugar.

In Singapore, you would find that the soup that is served with the Tangyuan can come in all sorts of varieties ranging from peanut soup, ginger soup and bean paste soup. Tangyuan lovers can not only enjoy this sweet dessert dish at hawker centers, they can also buy the frozen Tangyuans from the supermarkets and boil them in hot water or soup at home.
